Develop the Individual and the Team Will Come

In my gym, we follow an “Individual First” philosophy. As their coach, I do what I believe is best for each individual gymnast. I find that if I help her become the best that she can be, on her own path, then the team will naturally follow. I truly believe, as Stephen Covey says, “Treat them all the same by treating them differently.”
For instance, we are a part of a governing body that is optional-only. This means, that from the very beginning levels of competition, our gymnasts can put their own skills in their routines, we can highlight each individual’s strengths, and we can take the time to develop her weaknesses. This allows each individual to gain confidence in her skills and develop a sense of ownership over her gymnastics. She is not expected to look or be like anyone else, and she thrives with a higher self-esteem as a result.
I do not stress the team competition in meets. Of course, I celebrate with my team if we win, but it is not my focus. Instead, I help each individual gymnast develop her own set of goals for each meet. If she meets her new goals, then the team automatically improves. It’s built in.
If we can help our gymnasts see that their success has no bearing on anyone else, and that another’s success does not threaten hers, then our gymnasts will automatically be more supportive of each other. They will seek camaraderie rather than competition with one another. The team will become strong and supportive. Self-esteem will thrive.
Using the “Individual First” philosophy in my gym has truly allowed my gymnasts to thrive, continue to set goals, and to stay in the sport longer. Overall, their self-esteem increases, and we have a strong team as a result.
